Sustrans
Sustrans - the sustainable transport charity - works on practical
projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in
order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. 5000 miles of its
flagship project, the National Cycle Network (of which the National Cycle
Network is a part), were officially opened in June 2000 which will increase
to 10,000 miles by 2005 with a grand total as of summer 2003 of 7000 miles
of open cycle network.
As well as the National Cycle Network, Sustrans are also working on Safe
Routes to Schools, Home Zones and other practical responses to the transport
and environmental challenges we face. Sustrans' work relies on the generous
donations and monthly standing orders of 40,000 Supporters, and the support
of charitable trusts, companies, the National Lottery and local authority
programmes.
The National Cycle Network
The National Cycle Network is a comprehensive network of safe
and attractive places to cycle throughout the UK. 10,000 miles have
been completed by 2005 on traffic-free paths,
quiet lanes or traffic-calmed roads. It is coordinated
by the charity Sustrans, with the generous support of over 450 local
authorities
and other partners.
Sustrans Volunteer Rangers
With financial support from the Community Fund Sustrans co-ordinates
1,400 Volunteer Rangers who look after stretches of the National Cycle
Network including the Pennine Cycleway. Volunteer Rangers take charge
of small maintenance tasks such as ensuring signs haven't been pinched
and are sending you in the right direction, cutting back of vegetation
on traffic free sections and generally ensuring that the route you ride
is up to scratch. The Rangers are essential to maintaining cycle routes
around the country, to find out about volunteering as a Ranger visit Sustrans
website or get in touch with them at the contact details on the right
of this page.
